Looking after a perm may seem like it's going to be a lot of work, however once you know the tips and tricks about what to do and why to do it, caring for your hair and your perm will be a lot easier. A perm is a chemical treatment on your hair, and as such you should endeavour to have your hair in excellent condition before the perm - this may mean a cut prior to the perm. After the perming process is completed, your hair is in a fragile state which is why it's important in the first 24 to 48 hours not to wash your hair - it's important to let your hair rest and recover before applying other products to it. It's especially important not to let any other chemicals come into contact with it such as hair colour or chlorine from a pool.
After a couple of days - 2-3 is ideal, you may wash and condition your hair. Your hairdresser should have given you advice about which products are best suited, whether they are a salon-only range or store bought. If they didn't give you advice, you need to look for a shampoo and conditioner that has been designed for chemically treated hair as it will be gentle on your fragile hair and also assist in protecting from further damage.
There are also a few hairstyling tools that are important for someone who has permed hair - the most important tool being the comb. There are a range of combs that are made specifically for permed or curly hair which are designed to move through the hair easily without pulling or damaging the hair. Their wide teeth also assist with retaining the curls whilst assisting with de-tangling. Ideally, you will only comb your hair when it is wet and after it has conditioner on it, or you have added a leave in conditioner or de-tangling product post shower. Ensure any additional products you add to your hair are alcohol free to avoid drying the hair out further and making it fragile and easy to break.
You may use a hairdryer to dry your hair, however it's always best to use the leave in product before hand and to only dry your hair to about 90% dry to avoid over drying and making the hair frizzy. If you do find that the ends of your hair have become frizzy, a serum or hair oil will help de-frizz your hair and keep your curls looking fresher for longer.
